In case you missed the ACC extravaganza, the 2023 Virginia Tech football schedule was released this week. The entire lineup of the conference was unveiled at the studio show. This comes amid much anticipation, as last season the league announced it would drop the Atlantic and Coast divisions in favor of a new 3-5-5 scheduling model.
Vt Schedule 2023
In this new model, Virginia Tech will play three teams each year (Pittsburgh, Virginia, and Wake Forest), alternating home and away each year. They then play five of the other ten ACC teams to finish the season, and they alternate home and home games with those ten teams for four years. The good thing about this new model is that football players will now have the opportunity to play in every ACC team’s stadium during their four-year career. Hockey fans will see Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina State and Louisville come to Lane Stadium not once every fourteen years, but every four years!
Virginia Tech’s New Staff Lands First Verbal Commitment For 2023 Recruiting Class
Tech fans will be excited about the long-lost helmets coming to Blacksburg, as well as their first glimpse of the Hokies in what seems like generations. Pitt and Virginia are the only former Coastal Division opponents on this year’s schedule. So Tech fans should be excited to see some “new” ACC teams come to town.
After 18 years of scheduling challenges, the Hokies will visit Tallahassee for the third time since joining the ACC in 2004. Tech and Florida State used to play each year in the old independent/metro conference dates, so it’s great to see the Hokies go. Back to Doak Campbell Stadium.
In another scheduling anomaly, the Hokies have played at Louisville’s home, formerly known as Papa John’s Stadium, once since 1992. Sure, the Cardinals have only been in the ACC since 2014, but they’re a regional team and Virginia Tech just played. they have doubled since 1992. The Hokies and Cardinals are another pair of former Independent/Metro Conference rivals who square off in early November.

Coming off a 3-8 season with a historically bad offense, it’s hard to look at Tech’s 2023 schedule and say there are guaranteed wins. The Hokies’ two “farewell games” are Old Dominion, which beat Tech in last year’s opener, and Marshall, which won at Notre Dame last September. As Hokie Nation painfully witnessed last season, Virginia Tech needs to come out and perform in both of these games if it expects to win.
Other non-conference games pit Big Ten teams against each other this weekend, and while Rutgers is one of them, the Scarlet Knights play good defense and have solid special teams, which is bad for a Tech team that struggled offensively last year. . This trip to the home of college football may be as old as the first game on the old Raritan shore. It could be worse if it’s a repeat of a 20-point, 13-10 overtime hockey victory in the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl, the last time these two teams played.
College Basketball Odds: Virginia Tech Miami Prediction, Pick, How To Watch
There is no conference game that any sane fan would call a gimme. So, as I said in last year’s schedule preview, this slate could end up anywhere. Tech could end at 8-4… or 4-8. Techsideline.com’s David Cunningham has written a great recap of all the games on the schedule, so you don’t have to analyze every match. Instead, let’s look at the greatest of these eleven great Sabbaths and one Thursday in the fall.
Some games are important for Tech to play. Some are important depending on when or where the game is played. And some are important because of the storylines around them. But no matter how you slice it, these are the biggest games on the Virginia Tech football schedule for 2023…
In the second game of the season, Virginia Tech hosted the defending Big Ten West champion Purdue Boilermakers. Even though they are dealing with a new head coach and a transfer goalkeeper, they are still a quality Big Ten contender. No, they’re not ready to push Ohio State, Michigan or even Penn State for league bragging rights, but as evidenced by their Big Ten Championship appearance, they’re knocking on the door.
Wake Forest Unveils 2023 Schedule
It’s a program that compares favorably to Virginia Tech. Purdue is usually a middle of the pack team and every time they win their division. And they are often edible. It sounds like 2011 Virginia Tech. So it’s important for the Hokies to win this game and try to get back to the level we know they’ve fallen to recently.

Another storyline that many may not be aware of is the Hokies’ current streak against non-conference Power 5 teams. They have won eight games against non-ACC P5 opponents. Virginia Tech hasn’t won a game against a non-conference Power 5 team since beating West Virginia to open the 2017 season! If they lose to Purdue, lose to Rutgers next week, the streak will stretch to ten and could open at Vanderbilt in 2024. So this is a BIG game!
Virginia Tech Releases 2023 Football Schedule
After a two-week road trip, Virginia Tech returns to Lane Stadium to open against ACC rival Pitt. The first time these two teams met in the 1993 Big East Game, they split 22 games, with each school winning eleven. But Pitt, which has won four of its last five meetings, has been dominant lately. Did those four Petes’ total score win? 172-78. That’s an average of 34-15 per game.
Pitt most recently led Virginia Tech. If the Hokies want to get back into contention for ACC championships, it starts with this opponent. Tech needs to win their games against Pitt.
Fortunately, Israel Abanikan and Pitt’s defense will be missing several key players. However, Pat Narduzzi’s team can be expected to be physical and competitive when they take the field. The Panthers added former Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec from the transfer portal, and he is familiar with Virginia Tech. However, he hasn’t had much success at Lane Stadium, so Hokie Nation will have to hope that trend continues.
Two Home Meets Headline Owls 2023 Schedule
Regardless of who is under center and which players return on defense, the Hokies must beat Pitt if they expect to regain their spot as a conference championship contender.
It will be the middle of a brutal three-game stretch that began with Pitt and included three ACC teams that combined for 27 wins last season. This will be Tech’s first ACC road game and will be the toughest of the entire schedule.
This is a Florida State Revitalized Program. They won ten games in 2022, including wins over LSU and Oklahoma. They have scored 35 or more points in their last six games. They did not stop with these achievements during the season. They signed the second highest rating in the country. They will be a strong opponent and should challenge Clemson for the ACC Championship.

Florida State has been off for a few years, but unlike the U’s, the Seminoles are truly “back.” Clemson may be the current face of the league, but FSU will compete for that title and try to reclaim the dominance of a team that first joined the ACC (and won at least a share of the title in eleven of them). first twelve years in the league). It’s unlikely that Virginia Tech will win this one, but if they do, it will be the NCAA’s winner of the year. For now, Hokies fans should at least be competitive in the game.
It’s simple. This is a must-win game for Virginia Tech. It is important for the place, not for the opponent. Thursday night at Lane Stadium. The earth trembles. “Enter Sandman” is going to be amazing. The package will be electric – at least to start the game.
