Ut Baseball Schedule 2023 – The 2022 college baseball season is just under a month away. D1Baseball’s Kendall Rodgers and Aaron Fite sat down with us to break down their preseason Top 25 lists, which saw LSU become the first team in the country after stocking its roster with talent outside of the transfer portal. Rodgers and Fitt also break down the top five teams, talk to the top teams from the ACC, Pac-12 and Big 12, pick their Player of the Year candidates and predict the under-the-radar team that could reach the Men’s College World Series.

The LSU Tigers failed to clinch a regional berth in 2022, but enter the 2023 season as the outstanding No. 1 team in the nation. Coach Jay Johnson added a ton of talent from the transfer window this offseason, adding NC State’s Tommy White to join one of the nation’s best forwards in Dylann Cruz. But more importantly, their pitching staff has gone from being their biggest weakness last season to one of their biggest strengths this year with Air Force transfer and right-handed pitcher Paul Skeens leading the way. So now you have a strong offensive base with White, Crews and Tre’ Morgan. Great starting rotation with Skenes, Gerd and Grant Taylor. And on top of that, some great plays with Christian Little, a transfer from Vanderbilt.

“The weekend rotation was a problem (last season). LSU fans groaned a lot in the stands last year because they used about seven or eight pitchers a game,” Rodgers said. “I can promise you guys, you’re not going to use eight pitchers a game this year. It’s just a very deep pitching staff and an outstanding offense.”

One thing Rodgers added is that this team will feel a lot of pressure and expectations to live up to this season, and many teams will be ready for them.

“Everybody expects them to win a national championship. How often do we see the first team with a national championship? Not very often,” Rodgers said. “It’s going to be interesting to see LSU take a little hit and see how they respond to that because all the superstars are not easy to handle sometimes.”

Tennessee, Stanford, Ole Miss and Texas A&M round out the rest of D1Baseball’s preseason Top 25 teams. Three of those teams, excluding Tennessee, played in the MCVS last season, with Ole Miss winning the title. The Vols missed the MCVS last season despite winning 57 games and having a historic season. They finished 2nd despite losing an insane amount of offensive production due to the loss of Trey Lipscomb (22 HR), Luke Lipchius (19 HR), Jordan Beck (18 HR), Jarel Ortega (18 HR), Evan Russell ( 14 HR ), Courtland Lawson (12 HR) and Drew Gilbert (11 HR). But Fitt said this team has the best playing staff in the country returning.

“It started with Chase Dolander, who I think most of us think is the best pitcher in the country,” Fitt said. “You have Chase Burns, who was a freshman last year, who is your number two starter. Then you have Drew Beam, who was another guy on Team USA this summer. I mean, it’s a crazy weekend rotation and they still have some good pieces in the bullpen.”

Offensively, they filled some holes in their lineup and through the portal. Stanford is next on the list, and for them, it’s really a team built around big, scary bats, Fitt says. They have names like Carter Graham, Tommy Troy and Drew Bowser, which is an incredible amount of firepower in the outfield. Then there’s Brayden Montgomery, who Fitt described as one of the most electric two-way players in the country, who can hit for power and “knock 100 mph off the map.”

Fit then looked at the defending champions in Ole Miss. This team lost Tim Elk and Dylan DeLucia, but enters the season at No. 4. Jacob Gonzalez is back at shortstop and Kemp Alderman returns as a big offensive threat. Then, in addition to these names, they received several talents from the portal.

“You get Northwestern’s Anthony Kalarc to play first base, and Tulane’s Ethan Groff, who hit over .400 for the Green Wave last year, plays great defensively in center field,” Fitt said.

Finally, another team from Omaha last season in Texas A&M. The biggest thing the Aggies gave Rodgers was that a couple of players they expected to draft decided to return — Trevor Werner and Ryan Targak. Then you have a lineup loaded from top to bottom with Jack Moss leading the way.

Last season, Wake Forest took a big step forward and made a regional. Now Fit feels like it’s time for them to run. Seven ACC teams are ranked in the preseason D1Baseball Top 25 this year, trailing only nine SEC teams, and Fitt believes Wake is the team to beat them all.

“They haven’t been in this position in 20 years where they’ve been a top-10 team going into the season and they’ve had to deal with those expectations,” Fitt said. “But the firepower on the mound really stands out here.

That firepower is highlighted by reigning ACC Pitcher of the Year Rhett Lowder. Fitt gave him a pretty nice compliment, noting that he’s the only guy he thinks can match up with Tennessee’s Dolander as the best starting pitcher in the country. Then there’s Teddy McGraw, who played for Team USA last year and has what Fitt called electric, and Josh Hartle, who was the top-rated pitcher last season but had some struggles in his first season. . Fitt said he overhauled his mechanics in the offseason and they expect him to make a big jump. So there you have a rotation that the guys at D1Baseball think could match up against anyone, a pretty rich hitting lineup to go along with it, and now the #6 team in the nation and the team to beat from the ACC.

We mentioned that nine SEC teams and seven ACC teams dominate the D1Baseball Top 25 entering this season. Stanford leads the Pac-12 at No. 3. But there are some other teams worth noting, especially from the Big 12. Oklahoma State and TCU stand out as the conference leaders, with OSU entering the season at No. 9 and TCU at No. 15. But Rogers was most interested in how the rest of the conference would unfold. Consider teams like Texas — the Longhorns played in the MCVS in 2022 but lost a lot of talent, including the national player of the year in Ivan Melendez.

Texas Tech is another team to keep an eye on. This is a team that barely cracked D1Baseball’s top 25, entering the season ranked 23rd. Rodgers said when you look at this team on paper, you might think, ‘Oh man, how do you rate this team?’ But he followed it up by saying you just have to believe in head coach Tim Tedlak.

Oklahoma is another team to watch out for. This team finished second last season, but enters the season unranked. Rodgers pointed out that this OU team has a lot of questions. The offense still has the likes of John Spykerman, Jackson Nicklaus and Wallace Clark, but the big question for Rodgers was whether Texas transfer Jamie Heath could make an immediate impact on the mound.

Fite opened his game by noting that Crews is by far the biggest name in the country this season, but the stiffest competition he will face for the NPOI award is his teammates. White, who became an instant folk hero after opening his freshman season at NC State with a string of home runs, will be hitting even harder at LSU. According to Fit, Skens will step right into the rotation and give you stuff in the mid-to-high 90s for power. Then there are the Tennessee pitchers, the Stanford bats, Ole Miss’ Jacob Gonzalez and UNC’s Vance Honeycutt.

“But I think this is a race for Crews to lose right now,” Fitt said. “He feels like a guy, and if I had to choose a body, this is the one I’m going to go with.”
