North Carolina enters the fifth season of Mack Brown’s second season in Chapel Hill with high expectations, fueled by the return of a generation-caliber quarterback.

Drake Maye could be playing his final season in Chapel Hill, and the Tar Heels are trying to cash in on their first ACC championship in 40 years. To reach their goal, they will have to navigate what Brown calls “the among the most difficult processes in our school’s history.”

The way the ACC has structured the offseason, Carolina can’t afford to slip up there, either. The Heels finished the regular season with Duke, Clemson and N.C. State. So on paper, their losing streak to end the 2022 season will be the list that follows them into the 2023 season.

“They didn’t treat us well, it was really tough,” Brown said. “We started hard and finished with an incredible schedule, so I’m disappointed. I told them I didn’t think it was right. But it is what it is, and it is what we have. “

The silver lining in Carolina’s program comes from its many home games. Last season, the Heels played six road games and won all six. In the 2023 season, the Heels will only leave Kenan Stadium for four true road games and a neutral site game in Charlotte against South Carolina.

UNC at Clemson, Nov. For Carolina to truly show improvement as a program, it needs to win in situations like this game in Death Valley.

In the final three weeks of the season, Carolina will play a championship game against Duke on Nov. 11, then played at Clemson on Nov. 18, before finishing the regular season with another championship game in N.C. State. On paper, it’s arguably the Heels’ biggest three-game losing streak since Brown’s return in 2019.

It is hard to explain with this system. Maybe that’s when the Heels face Virginia in October. 21 before going to Georgia Tech on Oct. 28 and playing in a conference game against Campbell on Nov. 4. App State at UNC, Sept. 9: That has the kind of matchup that will soon be a thing of the past for all ACC schools, as they move forward to eliminate the Group of Five opponents from the schedule. Last year’s meeting in Boone was a blowout before the Heels pulled out an emphatic 63-61 victory. The Mountaineers won in Chapel Hill in 2019. It’s a game that will raise eyebrows in the state, but won’t draw much attention nationally.

For the North Carolina Tar Heels, next season is a chance to build on what was a promising 9-1 start in 2022 before finishing 9-5. That includes a bowl game loss to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl, a game UNC should have had one.

But 2023 will also be a new look for the Tar Heels team as they have lost many players to transfer while gaining others. The biggest loss will be offensive coordinator Phil Longo who worked with quarterback Drake Maye in 2022.

There is a long way to go before starting in September 2023 but it is not too late to look ahead to the 2023 schedule. Here is the schedule for 2023 and the opponents. All times and dates of ACC games will be announced at a later date.
