On Wednesday, The Big Ten officially announced updates to the upcoming 2022 football schedule. In an effort to leave behind some of the inconsistencies of the 2020 season, several teams received a combination of changed venues, changed dates, and changed opponents, in the cases of Penn State, Illinois, Northwestern, and Indiana.

The biggest change for the Nittany Lions comes in the addition of Northwestern to the schedule, replacing Illinois. The Illini had played in State College the previous two seasons, and had they stayed on schedule, would have played Penn State on the road for three consecutive seasons.

They also have a bye before taking on Michigan this season. , and, as already mentioned, Michigan State is back at the end of the season. Illinois may have been traded to Northwestern, but the Wildcats have a habit of winning division titles after falling short of four wins in a season.
