Penn State Football 2023 Schedule – The dust settled after Penn State’s Rose Bowl-led win over Utah ended an improbable 11-2 season earlier in the season. As news of transfers and returns circulate, the focus is on the 2023 championship roster — and it’s shaping up to be the most anticipated season since at least 2017, when Trace McSorely and Saquon Barkley returned from Big Ten championships. .
I expected the Mountaineers to be in full rebuild mode, but the program decided to stick with head coach Neil Brown for at least one more season. While productivity has dipped in recent years, West Virginia often plays to the level of its opponent. They will have to fight, but Penn State’s talent should help them pull away in the second half.

The Blue Hens are a respectable FCS program, but this should be nothing more than a chance to iron out some early-season jitters and clean up the seats in front of the Beaver Stadium crowd.

In the third week, things can get complicated. Illinois still has a long way to go before they start considering Big Ten championships, but they’ve come a long way in two seasons under Brett Bielema. The Illini offense wouldn’t light up the scoreboard, but they have the defense to keep the offense out of reach. It will be a great test for rookie quarterback Drew Allar in his third start.
The good news: Penn State will host Iowa at home, not the oft-revered home of horrors, Kinnick Stadium. Also, Iowa’s high school offense must find a way to produce in one of the nation’s harshest climates.
The bad news: Iowa added Michigan transfer Kady McNamara out of the gate to take over the quarterback role in 2023. McNamara is just the steady presence needed for an Iowa offense that has struggled to get going. He also has a win at Beaver Stadium and the 2021 Big Ten Championship before losing his spot to J.J. McCarthy last fall. Plus, nothing seems to come easy against Iowa.
Penn State 2022 Football Schedule: Who Are The Nittany Lions Playing In 2022?
The Wildcats have won a combined four games in the last two seasons since winning the West Division in 2020. Even worse, they enter the season on an 11-game winning streak. Penn State had its annual version of “whatever can go wrong offensively, will go wrong” against Northwestern in 2022, losing five turnovers in the monsoon but still winning by 10 points. Penn State can throw five touchdowns again this year and use the steam pouring out of James Franklin’s ears as a renewable energy source and still win by double digits.
The bye comes just before the midpoint of the regular season, after at least two high-profile quarterbacks have tested to gauge the offense before more testing begins in the second half of the year.
Penn State struggled the week after the bye, but it’s not one of those years. Like Delaware, the most stressful part of your day is whether or not to get that second hot dog (it’s Saturday, go ahead!).
Ohio State Releases Football Schedule For 2023 Season
Here’s an interesting quirk of the 2023 schedule. Penn State must survive the tests of West Virginia, Illinois and Iowa. If successful, they could go 5-0 with a vanilla game plan against Northwestern, followed by a bye week and then a home game against UMASS. While I understand the need for the tried-and-true “1-0 this week” mantra, the Nittany Lions could hypothetically start preparing for the Buckeyes after the Iowa contest on Sept. 23 and have almost a month to prepare before heading out. For Columbus, which could be one. One of the most anticipated games of the college football regular season.
Like Aiwa, this game would be even more disruptive if it were on the road. Penn State is off to a quiet start in Bloomington, which swells in the week after it faces Ohio State. Indiana shouldn’t pose much of a threat in Beaver Stadium this year.
Anyone confused about Maryland in this series? The Terps came out as if they were Penn State’s fiercest rivalry when they joined the Big Ten. But with two wins against two of Franklin’s worst teams, Penn State has paced Maryland on an annual basis. The Terps seem to have come off consistently against the Nittany Lions, but look much better against other opponents, especially Ohio State and Michigan.
Indiana Announces 2023 Schedule
There’s no other way to put it, Michigan completely outsold and outplayed Penn State last season. The silver lining is that it was a wake-up call for the program about what it takes to compete at the highest level, as it was the last time we saw any underperformance (aside from a couple of surprising turnovers against Ohio State ) from the Nittany Lions. Memories of that game will help fuel a grueling offseason as the team prepares for a special season in 2023. They’ve got this game rolling as the intensity turns up to 11 as they welcome them to Happy Valley for payback. In their minds – and maybe a lot more.
I give Rutgers the usual credit for getting up and giving it their best shot in this game. It hasn’t been enough yet and it won’t be this year either.
Mel Tucker became a hot commodity after the Spartans started the 2021 campaign surprisingly 8-0. He was able to hit all the right notes in transition to help the team to 10 wins in one year and many (myself included) expected them to finish in the Big Ten. Gateway wasn’t nearly as productive a year ago as the Spartans fell to 5-7. Michigan State can be hit or miss from season to season, but I’m rooting for Land Grant to close out the regular season rather than facing Rutgers and Maryland like we’ve seen in the past. Read on to see the wild saga that ensued Tuesday when Penn State accidentally posted the schedule early.
