Their $1.25 million commitment is one of the largest ever by a college football coach to his NCAA member institution. Dave Doeren has served as NC State’s head coach since the 2013 season.

“As a public land-grant institution, NC State is committed to enrolling and empowering a broad spectrum of students,” said Chancellor Randy Woodson. “We are honored to partner with the Doerens to provide additional support for gifted students so they can think and perform to their full potential. This donation truly reinforces our core values of community and inclusion.
“Philanthropy helps our university innovate and reach an even higher level of greatness. Thank you to the Doerens for being leaders of the entire Wolfpack and creating this meaningful family heirloom.
The new program launched through the Doeren Family Fund will be called OnePack Empowered and will benefit North Carolina State students who face challenges with executive skills critical to academic success, such as organizing , planning, prioritization, task execution and decision making. Autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are just two of the diagnoses that could be associated with challenges in this area, but students with these challenges may also not have a formal diagnosis.

With an emphasis on one-on-one mentoring, individualized support plans, career preparation, and additional specialist assistance, the program is designed to enhance academic and personal success and ensure students can graduate.
Doerens’ commitment will pilot the program for five years, serving up to 50 students at a time. They hope to inspire other donors to contribute to OnePack Empowered as a lasting source of support and guidance for a growing number of participants over the coming years.
“It’s about leveling the playing field so students can pursue their dreams,” said Dave Doeren. “It’s a matter of hope and creating a safe space for this student population to seek out their needs. We hope the idea resonates with many alumni and others connected to NC State.

“It’s something the school needs and the students need, and God has given us the ability to help,” he added.
NC State’s Department of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA) will oversee OnePackEmpowered, and staff are preparing for a spring 2024 launch. Doneka Scott, DASA Vice Chancellor and Provost, expressed gratitude to the Doerens for recognizing a gap and the measures to fill it.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our institution and especially for our students who will benefit from this rotation program,” said Scott. “The first goals of our university’s and DASA’s strategic plans focus on students and their success. We are very grateful to the Doerens for their vision to invest in this underserved student population.

NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan also praised the Doerens for leading by example by giving back.
“Dave and Sara’s generosity, commitment and vision for this program will benefit so many students for years to come. I’m thrilled to see the impact of OnePack Empowered and I’m very proud to have him leading our football program,” Corrigan said.
The donation represents a next step in the Doerens’ longtime passionate advocacy and support for people with disabilities. This passion is dear to their hearts, dating back two decades to the diagnosis of their son Jacob, placing him on the autism spectrum as a preschooler.

At the time, Doeren was on the football coaching staff at the University of Kansas. Jacob, the eldest of three boys in the family, appeared to have developmental delays.
“We spent three or four hours staring behind one-way glass while the doctors did all these tests,” Doeren said. “Then we were told that we had to be prepared that our son would never live outside our home or have a job. I was so angry. I said to the doctor, ‘You don’t you have no idea what my son is capable of. How dare you limit him?
“Since then, we’ve been on a journey where we’ve met incredible people, but also incredibly limiting people, situations, and labels.”

As difficult as navigating between K-12 levels can be for a family with a child with a disability, academic, social, and employment opportunities may become even more limited once the child graduates from high school.
The Doerens have been key advocates for the launch of 321 Coffee, which was started by two Park Fellows and staffed by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and for efforts such as hiring employees with disabilities at restaurants in the Murphy Center. The NC State football team regularly interacts with and supports groups such as GiGi’s Playhouse, which provides programs and support for people with Down syndrome.
Much of the Doerens’ personal philanthropy has also focused on efforts to improve opportunities for young people with special needs, such as donations to inclusive college athletic programs.

After graduating from high school in Wake County, Jacob attended Lewisburg College. The Learning Partners program helped him navigate note taking, time management, study skills, and more. He graduated with a 3.75 grade point average and was well prepared to apply for Appalachia State.
At Appalachian, where he is currently studying sustainable energy and technology, Jacob took advantage of a similar program called As-U-R. Weekly sessions with a mentor have proven to be essential for managing class work, defending yourself to teachers or asking for accommodations when needed.
The Doerens began discussions several months ago with Woodson and others at the university about how they could support something similar here.

“Jacob is doing so well,” said Sarah Doeren. “We just want other students to have the same opportunities. It made sense to help make that happen at NC State.”
“At some point, I definitely thought, ‘It’s a shame that the school I work at, with so many graduates, in the capital of North Carolina, and so many young people who could only benefit from in Wake County, has nothing like it,” Dave Doeren said. “Why not be at the forefront? I was very grateful that Chancellor Woodson understood the need and the opportunity for NC State.
Kesha Reed, Associate Vice Chancellor and Associate Vice Rector at DASA, is excited about OnePack Empowered. Reed brings expertise in underserved student populations and disability support programs. “There is definitely a need,” he said.

The application process is under development. Admission to OnePack Empowered will be personalized, inclusive and open, Reed said, with students not required to have an official diagnosis registered with the university’s Office of Disability Resources. But for context, he said that of the 1,845 students currently enrolled in the office, 57% could potentially have issues with executive function.
“We’re not talking about students who are admitted [to NC State] through a special process,” Doeren said. “We’re talking about students who have been accepted into college, who are very good academically, but who could benefit from something as simple as a mentor to constantly support them. This is a particular group of people who are too often labeled and limited. Instead of paths to success, they have roadblocks.
“I would like to open people’s eyes to the fact that with a little extra support, many children can achieve tremendous success.”

Much of the new OnePack Empowered funding will go towards adding and training dedicated staff. Reed said the program will be able to use and build on an existing structure within DASA that includes the Center for Academic Achievement, Office of Disability Resources, Counseling and Research Studies. , as well as leverage built-in resources such as counselors, teachers and academics and guidance counselors.
OnePack Empowered will be hosted under the umbrella of the Career Development Center and the focus on career readiness will be quite unique.
A cornerstone will be carefully trained student mentors who will be matched with participants as role models and links to resources. Parent engagement will also be built into the program as a core element.

“We’re looking for holistic supports that really help students gain the confidence that they can be partners in their own success,” Reed said. “We guide them through this process. We want to build a community that students want to be part of, where they can be enthusiastic and engaged. »
Reed and other staff hire a program director to lead OnePack Empowered and schedule additional staff. They developed a framework that includes four learning outcomes for students:
In addition to the Appalachian State program that focuses on students with executive functioning challenges, Reed said there are two other institutions in the UNC system that provide individualized support for students with special disabilities: STEPP at the East Carolina University and
