The NBA Finals is the annual championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Eastern and Western Conference champions play a best game series to determine the league champion. The team that wins the series will be awarded the Larry Aubrey Championship Trophy, which is the original 1977 Walter A. In lieu of the Brown Trophy.

The early days of modern professional basketball were dominated by the Minneapolis Lakers, who won half of the first T titles. The Philadelphia Warriors also won several championships, including the inaugural title in 1947 and another in 1956 in the NBA’s first decade. In 1951, the Rochester Royals defeated the New York Knicks in the only final between two teams from the same state. It was the first of three consecutive Finals losses for the Knicks, as they lost the 1952 and 1953 Finals to the Lakers. In 1954, the Lakers won again and became the first team to win the three-peat. It was the Lakers’ fifth championship in six years and their last in Minneapolis. The Syracuse Nationals won their only title in 1955 before becoming the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Warriors won their second and final title in Philadelphia in 1956 before moving to California.
