The franchise began in 1947 with the acquisition of the Detroit Gems (NBL) of the National Basketball Association. A new club started in Minneapolis, Minnesota, called the Minneapolis Lakers. Formerly a member of the National Basketball League, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL title before joining the American Basketball Association, where they won five of the next six titles under star George Mikan. Struggling financially in the late 1950s due to Mikan’s retirement, he moved to Los Angeles before the 1960-61 season.
Los Angeles reached the NBA Finals six times in the 1960s, led by Hall of Famers Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, but lost each series to the Boston Celtics, rekindling their old rivalry. In 1968, the Lakers acquired four-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Wilt Chamberlain, and in 1972, under the guidance of head coach Bill Sharman, they won their sixth NBA championship and the first in Los Angeles.
After the retirements of West and Chamberlain, the club acquired Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who won three MVP awards as a Laker. Although the team failed to reach the finals in the late 1970s, two major events in 1979 ushered in a new golden era. As owner of the Lakers, Jerry Buss was the first to see basketball games as entertainment as well as athletics. Second, the Lakers selected Magic Johnson with the first pick in the 1979 NBA draft.
