As I put together yesterday’s article about the Cubs season ticket price drop, something about next year’s schedule caught my eye. Here’s a thread to help you figure out what it is:

That’s right. A home game scheduled for Friday night at Wrigley Field, 7:05 p.m. to be exact. on Friday, July 14 against the Boston Red Sox.

I wrote about this topic. Lot. In fact, this is the 11th different article on this topic since July 2017. A city ordinance banning Friday night games is anachronistic and out of step with modern life in the city and baseball. Additionally, there were several Friday night concerts at Wrigley Field, and it didn’t matter if the Friday night concert was crowded at Wrigley or at the baseball game. (If anything, baseball audiences fight less.)

The timing of Friday night’s game is interesting – it comes after the All-Star break, meaning everyone playing in this Cubs/Red Sox game will have at least two and possibly four days off before it happens. I suggested last Thursday that the Cubs could be allowed to play home games on Friday nights if they have a night game in another city, but that scenario is completely off the table for 2023. In the past, as I detailed in the StoryStream linked above, there have been several instances in which the city has allowed a Friday night game at Wrigley. Why not turn it on when it happens?

Additionally, 2023 will mark the 35th anniversary of the first night game at Wrigley Field. While some of the neighborhood’s residents may have been in Wrigleyville for a long time, the vast majority of people there have moved since night baseball was played in Wrigley. I don’t think there’s any reason to regulate the night game anymore. Cubs pay for neighborhood cleanliness, police protection is good, and zoned parking leaves residents with parking spots.

I think the night game ordinance should be repealed and the Cubs should be allowed to play as many night games as they want. In practice, it can be between 45 and 50 per year. That way, they’ll have enough afternoon games to keep the “Wrigley Day Game” tradition going, while also having a home schedule comparable to 29 other teams. Now this Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) is retiring and a new mayor will take office next spring, so maybe that will happen.
