Alabama (21-3) appears to be in full swing in recent weeks, shrugging off a tough showing at Oklahoma two weekends ago. The Crimson Tide have won their first eleven conference games and lead a healthy SEC streak. This Alabama team stifles the opposition on both sides of the ball and has impressive wins, including a road sweep of Houston in December. Will they have another road win this weekend?

The story for the Crimson Tide has been the play of freshman Brandon Miller (19.0 ppg, 8.3 rpg), who might be the best freshman in the country. He led the team with 24 points in a recent win over Florida and is making 44% of his 3-pointers this season. Rookie Noah Clowney (10.0 ppg, 8.1 rpg) has been terrific lately, including 16 points and 11 rebounds against Houston two months ago. Junior guard Mark Sears (13.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg), a former starter at Ohio State, fits well in Nate Oates’ system.

Alabama is No. 3 in the AP Top 25, but No. 2 in both the KenPom and NET rankings, behind Houston in both metrics. Alabama plays at the fastest tempo in the country while playing an elite level offense and defense. They have had incredible shooting performances this season, including 59% shooting against Vanderbilt. Suffice to say, the Crimson Tide is firing on all cylinders and coming together in a big way.

On the other side of the field, things are less impressive for Auburn (17-7), which needs a big win to start the season. The Tigers had a solid start to the season, but have now dropped four of their last five games, including a sweep at the hands of Texas A&M. Last weekend, they scored just 43 points in a tough loss to Tennessee.

But Auburn has no shortage of talent, starting with junior guard Wendell Green Jr. (13.9 ppg, 4.4 apg), who had a 20-point performance against the Aggies. Last year, Auburn had two great pieces in the frontcourt, but this year’s rotations aren’t bad, led by sophomore forward Johnny Broom (13.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg). Broome, a former Morehead State star, fits well on the Tigers’ back end with senior forward Jaylin Williams (10.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg).

Auburn is currently unranked in the national polls, but is ranked No. 27 by KenPom and No. 32 by Netti.The defense (14th in efficiency) plays well, especially on defense and rim protection, but it’s the offense that has beaten the Tigers more often than not. We’ve already mentioned the poor effort against Tennessee; This is one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the country and an offense that breaks teeth at times.

Obviously, Auburn needs a win very badly, but what they need is a change of direction and momentum. A win at home against a bitter rival would be the perfect antidote to such a run, but is it possible? Broome is fantastic in the frontcourt and the Tigers defend the 3-ball well. Alabama is going to hit a lot of long shots and score a ton.
